CATCH A WAVE

This program was developed by Kathy Foster, Sidewalk Sunday School in Tomball, Texas.  It is best described in her own words:

Catch A Wave - wet, wild and fun! "I called it "Catch a Wave With Jesus", being water-based games. I had to figure out a way to get kids out of their houses in this hot Houston climate. Someone just wrote me and asked for this and I thought I might also send it to you, in case you can use it for anything. The actual lesson came from the Veggie Tales VBS. I had to have something "different" that would work here in our climate and this is what I came up with and we had great results. In fact, some churches in town called and I shared what we did and they also did it."

For additional information, comment or advise, please contact Kathy Foster at TeamTX@SidewalkSundaySchool.org

Thank you

LESSON 1: ACCEPTING OTHERS

VIDEO: " The Story of Flibber-o-loo"

You could set up your TV and VCR perhaps in the garage, or at the edge of the garage and have kids sit on beach towels on driveway, or under a canopy, shade tree, etc. DO NOT HAVE IT IN YOUR HOUSE! Be sure the cords are not in water. Ask the children if you are their neighbor. A person doesn't have to live on your same block to be your neighbor. Explain that a neighbor can be someone you know, as well as people you don't know.

 AFTER DISCUSSION SHOW VIDEO

(for a reward for answering questions correctly, give kids a squirt with the water hose or let them take a run through the sprinkler. Caution: make sure the child likes being squirted with water first!)

Catch a Wave

 Video Review Questions:

What happened to Larry the Cucumber? (He went for a walk, had his milk money stolen, and was put in a hole.)

Who came along and saw Larry? What did they do? (The mayor and town doctor came by, but they were too busy to help Larry. Then a friend from an enemy town (Liberty Lot) came by and helped Larry  out of the hole and back into town.

Why did the friend (Good Samaritan) from Liberty Lot help Larry?   (He knew he would want Larry to help him if he were stuck! He also knew that God made all of us special and wants us to help each other.)

What did all the townspeople decide? (That it’s much better to accept and help one another by loving your neighbors.)

BIBLE PRESENTATION: LUKE 10:25-37

(You can use children to use the puppets to act the story out as you tell it). Be sure and use your Bible, you can put your lesson and notes inside your Bible, but it’s important they know this comes from God’s Word.)

" ACCEPTING OTHERS : THE GOOD SAMARITAN"

Jesus told a story called The Good Samaritan. We can read it in our Bible. (Show them where it is located in your Bible.) A man was traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho. He has along way to go! They didn't have trains or cars.

Sometimes they didn't even have a horse or donkey to ride. The man traveling to Jericho had to walk! While the man was walking along the road, a terrible thing happened to him! Someone came along and beat him up and stole all his money! Then the robber left the man on the side of the road. After awhile, a priest came down that very same road. The priest was a leader of worship. He saw the man who had been robbed and beaten. But he didn't stop to help the man, he just kept going. He was too busy to help.

After awhile longer, another person came down the road where the man was waiting for someone to help him. This person was from the same town as the hurt man. He was very happy to see him coming because he thought the man would help him. But he became sad when saw the man pass him by without stopping to help him.

The traveler was very sad because no one cared about him or would help him. He waited and waited. Finally, another man came by. But this man was from a different town than the traveler. He was a Samaritan. Some people did not like Samaritans, and said they were awful people! So the man that was hurt was very disappointed. But not for long, because the Samaritan did stop to help the hurt man.

The Samaritan took care of him, bandaged him up, put him on his donkey, and took him where he could rest and heal. He knew God wants us to treat everyone else the way we want to be treated. So, the Samaritan was happy to help.

Who do you think was the good neighbor? Was it the priest? (hold up priest puppet.) Was it the man from the same town? (puppet) Was it the Samaritan? (puppet) YES! The Samaritan was God’s helper, because he reached out to his neighbor who needed help. The Samaritan was acting like Jesus, because he loved his neighbor.

You could discuss how we must love people regardless of what color their skin is, whether they talk funny, fat or skinny, in a wheel chair, etc. Also, ask them to tell you how they can show love to people at home, school, playground, etc. They must know how this relates to their life.

 MEMORY VERSE:

" Love your neighbor as yourself" Luke 10:27

Important: Be sure and give children the opportunity to ask Jesus into their lives!

EXTRA IDEAS:

Paint a palm tree, and some clouds on an old sheet to hang as a backdrop on your fence or string between 2 trees. Shelly Ludwig painted a really simple, but cute one last year.Catch a Wave

Take an old sheet spritz with light blue paint to make an underwater scene, then let dry. Later, spritz with water and have sheet moist. Then spritz on green paint to make underwater plants, bright or neon colors for simple fish designs. The colors will run slightly making an underwater look.

Set out beach umbrellas, beach towels, old surfboards, etc. for decorations.

Wear shorts or covers over swimwear please and be modest.

Wear sun visors, zinc on your nose, sunglasses, Hawaiian leis to complete your look.

Try and borrow extra kiddy pools to all kids have water to sit in during lesson, it gets really hot. If kids don't like being squirted directly with water, try squirting water into air, then coming down on children.

They have really cute sprinklers out now for $10 & less that look like flowers, etc. Have several!

Post flyers at your neighborhood clubhouse, newspaper, store, etc.

We are making some signs to help you out. There needs to be one at the end of your street with balloons on it to draw attention, then one in your yard. One big sign also needs to be in front of your subdivision where there is a lot of traffic.

There are a lot of cute ocean squirter toys at Dollar Tree with 6 to 8 in each pkg. You could give away prizes from McDonalds, pencils, etc.

You & your children or helpers could go door to door for a few blocks around your house giving out flyers and a personal invitation.

Make sure your yard looks so fun that kids just can’t resist coming!
